Photo of the Week - Tree of Life Animals

You could take dozens of photos and not capture all the animals that make up the tree of life at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Here are a few you can find near the entrance to "It's Tough to be a Bug."

Mickey’s MMA Festival 2010

In a special nonexistent press release it was announced that Mickey’s MMA Festival would be coming back. The fight card will change greatly. However there will be some rematches.

Mickey Mouse vs. The Jonas Brothers – Inspired by an episode of the Comedy Central cartoon South Park, Mickey will be facing off with the dreaded Jonas Brothers.

Professional Opinion: Mickey will wipe the floor with the girly boys. He’s been working out a lot lately to get in shape for Epic Mickey. He also has experience on his side. Expect Mickey to knock out all of the brothers by the forth round.

Princess Battle Royal - This is a rematch with a twist. Cinderella, Aurora, Jasmine, Snow White, Belle, Ariel, and new comer Tania will step into the ring in a no holds bar, electrified steel cage, ladder, table, garbage can, match. The winner will be declared top princess.

Professional Opinion: Look for Cinderella to get off to a great start. Years of fighting with her step sisters has toughened her up. All the manual labor has also given her a strength advantage. Don’t forget about the glass slippers. In a match with no rules they can be used as weapons.

Miley Cyrus vs. Annette Funicello - New school meets old school in this fight. Annette might be old but she’s been around the block a number of times. Miley Cyrus isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer and is going into this fight cocky. She thinks her age advantage will make this a slam dunk.

Professional Opinion: Funicello in the first round. Once Cyrus takes the first punch she’ll crumble.

Disney Bear vs. Liver Lips – In this clash of the titans we’ll see a rare appearance by the Disney Bear when he attempts to take down the Country Bear Jamboree Slugfest winner Liver Lips.

Professional Opinion: Liver Lips in a split decision. Disney Bear will stick it out because he’s afraid of being shelved. Liver Lips will get tired after a few rounds because he’s horribly out of shape. Might as well take a nap after the first few rounds.

Michael Eisner vs. Robert Iger – CEO vs. Former CEO in this amazing fight. This is the fight everyone is talking about.

Professional Opinion: Iger in the third round. Eisner is the better fighter but Iger just sold a ton of stock to get Eisner to throw the fight.

Doggie Match of Doom – The fur is going to fly when Goofy (yes he is a dog), Pluto, Bolt, and Copper (Fox and the Hound) will steep into the ring in the first ever four way fire hydrant match.

Professional Opinion: The biggest underdog, Copper, will win this one. Copper is a basset hound. They only move if food is involved. Copper’s trainer has promised him all the food he can eat if he wins this match. You don’t get between a basset and food.

Carl vs.Wall-E – In what is being called the strangest match Carl of Up fame will be taking on everyone’s favorite robot, Wall-E.

Professional Opinion: Wall-E hands down. Once Carl breaks his cane on Wall-E’s metal head he’ll be defenseless against the enraged robot.

Ursula vs. Maleficent – Love them or hate them this is the match everyone wants to see. These two have been lighting up Twitter with insult after insult and now they are going to settle it in the ring!

Professional Opinion: Ursula will have a big advantage until Maleficent changes into her dragon form and fries Ursula like a big chunk of calamari.

Flik vs. Mary Popins – How did this match come about? The card needed one more fight so the promoters had the computer provide two random names from the Disney archives.

Professional Opinion: Mary Popins in 2.5 seconds. Not only is everyone’s favorite nanny; magical, talented, and undefeated in 29 mixed martial arts fights, she’s out weights her opponent by 120 pounds.

Dorey vs. Flounder – Many people don’t know but these two dated for over a year. They broke up over allegations that Dorey cheated on Flounder. Dorey claims not to remember ever doing such a thing.

Professional Opinion: Flounder in the 10th. Expect Dorey to keep forgetting she’s in a fight. Flounder might be wimpy but he’s an angry wimp.

The Princess and the Frog – There's 90 Minutes of My Life I Can't Get Back

I finally got around to watching the Princes and the Frog. I remember all of the hoopla over her being the first African American princess and how the firefly was offensive. You can’t overlook all of the talk about it being a return to Disney’s animation roots either.

One thing that was overlooked, is what completely ruined this movie for me.

Before I do the bad I’ll do the good.

Tiana – Tiana is one of my favorite Disney characters ever. You like her from the beginning. She’s a strong well rounded character.

The Music – The music is a perfect fit for this movie. It was just great.

The Colors / Animation – It was nice to see an animation that was CGI. The colors were bright and everything looked great. The hand drawn animation gave the movie a warm feeling to it.

The Characters – Most of the characters are great. Some of them are just awful but overall the characters feel well rounding and are fun.

So what is wrong with the Princess and the Frog? One word – Voodoo.

I’m sorry but there are a lot of people out there who actually practice voodoo. It’s their religion. I’m not a “black arts” nut but I know enough to stay away from it. If the voodoo was a small part of this movie it would not have bothered me but voodoo is basically the main theme of the movie. Some parts were so dark and demonic they really made me uncomfortable.

I know a lot of people would say that it was just a movie and Disney wasn’t trying to represent actual voodoo in their movie. That might be true but it doesn’t mean it didn’t ruin the movie. It reminded me a lot of the Pirates movies. The first one was amazing. It didn’t go overboard with the occult. The second one was a little worse and the third one was just awful.

For me there is a fine line between fantasy and the occult. I enjoy fantasy (like Lord of the Rings). I do not enjoy the occult (Leigon). I’m sure I’m in the minority on this one but that’s why I hated The Princess and the Frog. It had such a great start and then completely fell apart.

Review: Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant

We were at Downtown Disney about eight hours before our flight. We were poking around and doing a little shopping. We knew we were going to eat somewhere but didn’t know where. We knew Rain Forest and T-Rex were not an option. We had no desire to abuse ourselves like that. We’d heard great things about Earl of Sandwich but when we got there the line was out the door so that was out.

We walked in the door at Raglan Road and were directly seated. We didn’t even have to hold a pager which amazed us. We’d never been to a Disney Restaurant that didn’t give us a pager. Typically even if no one is in the restaurant they hand you a pager and then page you about ten seconds later.

The atmosphere was great. In fact the pub was shipped in pieces from Ireland. That seems crazy but they did it. The place was almost a perfect fit. They only got one thing wrong. At Raglan Road the bathroom is on the ground level. Anyone who has been to England / Ireland knows that a vast majority of the bathrooms are in the basement. I think it’s their version of a sobriety test. If you can make it up and down the stairs you can have another drink.

The service started on the bad side. It just took too long for our waiter to come over for the first time. After that it was great. Our waiter was very nice and attentive. He even took care of a problem without hesitation. My wife ordered a Newcastle. I don’t know what arrived but it was not a Newcastle. It was far too bitter. Our waiter corrected it without blinking an eye and apologized for the incident.

The food was some of the best we’d experienced in Disney World. It was classic food that hit the spot. The soda bread with Guinness reduction and olive oil was a great freebie. My wife got the Fada Burger. She said it was one of the best burgers she had ever had. She loved it. They say you get bacon on that burger. It was more a slice of ham than it was bacon. It was great. I ordered the Keen Eye for the Shepherds Pie. It was amazing. Even if you hate shepherds pie you will love this dish. You just have to try it.

Then there is the beer. Raglan Road has, in my opinion, the best selection of beers on Disney property. It might not have the biggest selection or the rarest stuff but any bar that has Guinness, New Castle, and Smithwicks on tap is top notch in my book.

How good is Raglan Road? It’s worth going to Downtown Disney for. Unless I had some time to burn or was going to La Nouba, I would never have considered going to Downtown Disney but Raglan Road is that good.

Photo of the Week: Most Wanted

One thing Disney does better than any other theme park anywhere or even EVER is their queue design. At other theme parks you wait in line and do nothing but watch the minutes tick away. I hate to admit this, but some of the attractions in Disney World have a better queue than they do ride.

This is not one of those cases. This is picture is from the queue in Toy Story Midway Mania. Although it has one of the best queues in Disney World it still has one of the best rides to match it.

If you want a bad queue, go to Fantasy Land.

Review: Big River Grille and Brewing Works

Big River is a restaurant at Disney’s Boardwalk Resort. We did not have an ADR for this restaurant but decided to give it a shot. They make their own beer and try to give a contemporary beer pub atmosphere to compliment it.

Are the beer, food, and atmosphere worth the trip over to the Boardwalk?

Food: My wife and I wanted a light dinner so we avoided entrées and opted to both get an appetizer instead. I ordered the chicken nachos and my wife ordered the beef nachos. They were decent but the cheese was a cheese sauce. It reminded me of cheese wiz. Or the liquid sauce they serve at sporting events. At least the portions were big.

Beer: Between my wife and I, we tried four beers. That was four too many because none of them were all that good. The best one was the Belgian style ale but I wouldn’t rave about it. I also ordered an IPA. I Like IPAs. What I got served was an awful excuse for an IPA. It was so bad I question the fact that it was an IPA or an opps by the bar tender. It was red. IPA’s should never be red.

Service: Well we got seated and served. I say that because there was reason to question that for a while. When we checked in we were given a pager and told it would be about ten minutes. They paged us forty minutes later. I understand if you off a little but a half hour off is unacceptable. We would have gone somewhere else if we had known it was going to be that long of a wait. The service itself was decent but I question how accurate the waitress was with our drinks. I think someone goofed up. When you work at a brewery you should be able to spot the difference between beers.

Atmosphere: Two things really hurt Big River. First it’s too crowded. Second it’s a resort restaurant. The second really hurts it because that means parents are dragging kids, who are half dead, in there way about two hours after they should have been put to bed. My wife and I ate around 9pm and we were surrounded by kids. Big River is an awful place to bring kids. For the most part it’s a loud bar which is bad for kids. Combine that with kids who are falling asleep at the tables and you have a terrible mix. The only cool thing about the inside of Big River, are the big beer vats. It’s not that it’s bad inside it is just crazy and over crowded.

Cost: The cost isn’t bad but it is still on the expensive side. It’s a little too expensive for not being located inside a theme park. My wife and I only ordered appetizers and four beers and paid more than full meals at other WDW restaurants.

I have no desire to ever go back to Big River. Not when Epcot is so close. Even if I stayed at the Boardwalk again I really doubt I’d go to Big River again. I’d go to the ESPN Zone it’s much cheaper.

The Power Rangers Get Flushed!

When I heard the news that Disney unloaded the rights to the Mighty Morphing Power Rangers, I jumped for joy. I always hated the Power Rangers. They drove me nuts to begin with never mind the fact that Disney bought the rights and stuck them into DHS.

To put it simply the Power Rangers and Disney were like oil and water. They do not belong together. I can’t tell you how much it annoyed me when I’d be walking through DHS and I’d run into the Power Rangers. I guess I’m a purist. I don’t want to go to Disney and see the Power Rangers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or any other non-Disney (Pixar is ok but I don’t want to see Marvel either) characters in the parks.

I’d like to go to DHS on August 7th, 2010 just to celebrate the Power Ranges going away. I won’t though. I can’t afford it and I wouldn’t want to upset the kids who really like the Power Rangers. For those kids I have some good news. Disney sold the rights back to the original owners who turned around and sold the rights to Nickelodeon. You’ll be able to see the Power Rangers there in the near future.

San Angel Inn: One Hit Wonder?

My wife and I ate at the San Angel Inn in December of 2008. In March of 2010 we went back. Was it as good as before? Did it change?

I’ll start by saying – Don’t listen to Hoochberg! He’s a Mexican food snoob. The San Angel Inn is still very good. It may have even gotten better since we were last there. I’m not going to go into details of everything in this review. I’m only going to cover anything that is different. If you want an in depth overview, check out my last review of this restaurant.

Food: I ordered the Conchinita Pibil. I loved it. I can’t get anything like it around my house. It’s slowly cooked shredded pork marinated with achiote seeds, beer, garlic, red onions, and orange juice. I wish I wasn’t on a diet now because just thinking of it is making me hungry.

Drinks: They had so many drinks that sounded good it was a hard choice. I ended up picking a Fiesta Margarita. I didn’t know what that was but I was in a festive mood. It turned out to be a mix of all the other margaritas. If you can’t decide this is the one for you!

Service: The service was very good and fast. You can’t complain with the service they provided.

Cost: For Mexican it’s expensive but when you consider the atmosphere and the fact that it’s located in a theme park, the prices are not bad at all.

Overall the San Angel Inn did it again. It’ll once again be on our list the next time we go. Only two other restaurants have made a bid for a threepeat and when you consider the number of restaurants in Disney, that’s saying a lot.

Stuck on the Tower

A business really shows its true color when something goes wrong. I’ve seen good companies turn into monsters when trying to right a wrong (or in some cases ignoring the wrong).

What did Disney do when my wife and I got stuck on the Tower of Terror? Granted that’s not a major problem but it still wasn’t fun.

We had been through all the drops, entered the maintenance room, turned to face the elevator door and started to move towards it. That’s when we stopped. Right away I knew something was wrong. We were about six inches short of where we needed to be. The music / voiceover ran its length followed by about thirty seconds of silence. Still we were not moving. Next the lights turned off, the wall to the left of us opened and the wall on the right closed for the next ride vehicle.

After about a minute in the dark someone turned the lights on. We could see into the guts of the tower. It was just a typical unthemed area. A mechanic turned the corner with another guy. The mechanic had a uniform on that somewhat fit in with the Tower of Terror theme. He looked under our cart and in no time got us moving, and the doors opened. Instead of just disappearing after that he got right in the act by apologizing and saying he hoped it didn’t ruin our stay at the Hollywood Tower Hotel. He also said if we needed anything to ask for assistance from the bellhop.

First of all the fact that a cast member who is behind the scenes would be required to dress in a costume that fits in with the theme is amazing. The fact that he would be trained not to break the story is even more amazing. That really hits home when you realize he might have to interact with guests only a handful of times a year.

Review: The Legendary Chef Mickey’s

Let me start by saying that I have fond memories of Chef Mickey’s. When I was a kid Pluto stole my shoe and ran away with it. Back then Chef Mickey’s was an open restaurant with amazing views of the Monorail and the inside of the Contemporary. Things have changed:

Food: We went for breakfast. Even though it’s a buffet it’s one of the best breakfasts you’ll find in Disney World. The selection is top notch and the quality is good. It’s not as good as the Kona Café but it’s good.

Atmosphere: Chef Mickey’s went through a major renovation in the last few years when almost the entire floor of the Contemporary was redone. A vast majority of the seats are now inside. Chances are you will not get a table that is out in the open. There are just too few of them. Like most of the other popular restaurants the experience was lessened to add capacity. At times it seemed like there were just too many people crammed in for breakfast. If you are in one of the open tables it’s not so bad but inside it can get loud.

Entertainment: If your goal is to meet the Fab Five you’re in the right place. Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto all make appearances here. Most of the cast members do their characters to perfection. Goofy was an exception. Instead of being goofy he was kind of a jerk. He teased and made fun of people instead of acting like the character.

Service: The service was very good for a buffet and they checked in often. Our waitress was very nice too.

Cost: This is the most expensive breakfast you’ll find. At home I could pay 1/6th the price for the same thing. My rule of thumb is I expect to pay up to double on vacation. This was far beyond that.

Overall I’d only go back to Chef Mickey’s if I was staying at the Contemporary. I would not go out of my way to see it. So many of the famous restaurants in Disney have fallen into that category. They got popular so management decided to squeeze as much money out of them as possible. That’s why you always need to try other places before they get ruined too.

Photo of the Week - Mr Potato Head

Easily one of the best audio animatronics in Walt Disney World. Mr. Potato Head is a must have for the queue of Toy Story Midway Mania. Without him there would be no distraction from one of the longest lines in all of Disney World.

300 Posts – Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid

Someone once said that all good things come to an end. I guess that says a lot about this blog because it’s not stopping anytime soon. A wife who doesn’t like Disney, living about 1200 miles away, and a total lack of support hasn’t been able to stop me yet.

What stood out in posts 201 to 300?

The “CMDTA on Vacation” series is one that really stood out. That poor excuse for a vacation showed me the difference between a good cruise line and a cruise line that shouldn’t still be in business.

I covered the passing of Roy E. Disney and did a somber Year in Review.

Post #215 “Awful Weather Predicted for the First Week in March” turned out so true it scares me. I predicted the weather almost spot on, months before it happened.

I once again made fun of WDW Today personality and the Unofficial Guide co-author Len Testa. Len is always good for a fun story.

The Photo of the Week series really got going.

I uncovered another conspiracy in my “Tentfest Revenge” post.

I had a field day with the line up for Eat to the Beat.

Instead of handing out my typical “Thank You” to everyone I thought it would be more fitting to hand out apologies. I’d like to unofficially apologize to the following people for abusing them:

Taylor Dane – I know you’re not dead now.

Hanson – I’m sure some people are still entertained by you.

Kool and the Gang – 70 million people can’t be wrong…I hope.

Len “Everyone’s Favorite Alien” Testa – You don’t hate Donald Duck…I think.

Matt “Mattie Cakes” Hoochberg – For having to read all those emails I send in.

The old guy with the bad comb-over who liked to fart on his balcony during my vacation – Maybe you have colitis or something.

The cast of “It’s a Small World”- I bet you don’t like the ride either

Rick Springfield – Wait I bet you liked what I said.

Sister Hazel – You’re still making money.

Boys 2 Men – It could be worse.

The ugly guy in La Nouba – I know you don’t like being ugly

Air Supply – Over 30 years and still going.

Billy Ocean – My parents like you…I think.

The grumpy bus drivers in Walt Disney World – I’m sure you have a reason to be grumpy.

38 Special – Some people like mullets.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - There are a few people who still listen to swing music.

Sugar Ray – With enough makeup I bet you’re still passable.

Taylor Hicks – Well at least you have a career.

Night Ranger – I hear “Sister Christian” still gets played in karaoke bars everywhere.

The cast of “The Tiki Room under New Management” – Your ride isn’t awful, it’s just really bad.

Payton Manning – Actually no. I don’t like you or your brother and I have a t-shirt to prove it.

Colts Fans – Because you are Colts fans.

Everyone who likes Disney World and stumbled on this blog - Sorry

Like usual here is my list of the last 100 posts.
